risk identification Lab

the lab mission

The mission of this lab is to be able to accurately detect risk, particularly for suicidal behaviors, for all people at all points in time.

Our focus on suicidal behavior is driven by three unfortunate facts.  First, nearly one million people die by suicide and roughly 25 million engage in nonfatal suicide attempts each year. Second, the field's ability to detect risk for suicidal behaviors is at near-chance levels -- essentially, we are only marginally more accurate than a coin flip.  Third, despite hundreds of studies on this topic over the last fifty years, there has been little meaningful progress in suicide risk detection.

Our goal is to make major progress on this front. Our approach represents a radical shift from the status quo, with the aim of drastically advancing risk identification, especially for suicidal behaviors.
